When? The First Article Inspection usually happens right after the manufacturer starts producing the first samples, the first mass production products; we will send our inspector when1% to 10% of your ordered quantity will be produced.

Where? This quality inspection is usually performed at the factory; anywhere in Vietnam & Worldwide.

What? This quality control inspection include the following checks: quality of the raw materials and components used in the production; first production samples according to your approved samples or specifications; cooperation of the factory; double checking of the understanding of your demands by the factory; production schedule and production processes control; in-house quality control checks.

Why? Because as an international buyer, you are often facing poor communication, poor reactivity. Because you want certainty, you want to make sure your requirements are well understood. You want to make sure that the production will start efficiently with the right materials and the right processes.

FIRST ARTICLE INSPECTION (FAI)

A First Article Inspection (FAI) when any of the following occur:

•    The first time material is provided

•    A change in design (partial FAI for affected features/characteristics)

•   A change in manufacturing source(s), process(es), inspection method(s), location of manufacture, tooling, materials, NC, programming, natural or man made event (force majeure).

•   The first time material is provided in over 2 years

First Article material shall be produced using production tooling, processing and methods and must include all design data specified by the PO, Engineering drawing and any other applicable design document. A material certificate and special process certificate where applicable must be provided with the FAI report.

The following form is may be used by INSPECTORS/SURVEYORS of AIM Control Inspection Group for First Article Inspection.

"First Article Inspection" is the act of comparing a physical sample part with the specifications (usually a detail drawing, or blueprint) against which it was made. The sample is usually one of the first parts made from a tooling or a setup, thus the name.

Each specification dimension is measured on the physical part, compared against the print, and a list constructed of which dimensions were met and which weren't. For a simple part, this list is quite small. But for a complex part the list of dimensions can be extremely long and the inspection quite involved.  Any dimension that appears on the print must be measured on the part and listed in the report.
